Second Grade Core Knowledge Visual Arts Program
Art lessons illustrate important elements of making and appreciating art, and emphasis important artists, works of art and artistic concepts. When appropriate, topics in the visual arts may be linked to other disciplines. The following is a variety of artworks in different media and from various cultures. They are not intended to be comprehensive. Throughout the year we build upon the core content and explore a wide range of art and artists.
Elements of Art
Elements of art are generally considered to include line, shape, space, form, light, texture and color.
Line
Recognize line as horizontal, vertical and diagonal.

Kinds of Paintings
We have already learned about the genre of portrait, self portrait and still life.
In discussing paintings we talk about what we notice first and then what the picture makes us think about and feel. Later, we go on to talk about lines, shapes, colors and textures, details not obvious at first, why we think the artist chose to depict things in a certain way etc.
