Third Grade Core Knowledge Art Program
Lessons illustrate important elements of making and appreciating art, and emphasize important artists; works of art and artistic concepts. When appropriate, topics in art are linked to topics in other disciplines. While the following guidelines specify a variety of artworks in different media and from various cultures, they are not intended to be comprehensive. We build upon the core content and expose children to a wide range of arts and artists.
Elements of Art
The generally recognized elements of art include line, space, form, shape, light, texture and color. In third grade we build upon what the children have learned in earlier grades as we introduce the elements of light, space and design.

We study the art of the Southwest and Eastern Woodland Indians in third grade and review the art of the Pacific Northwest Indians from Kindergarten. We talk about the spiritual purpose and significance of many American Indian works of Art.

Kachina Dolls (Hopi, Zuni)
Navajo (Dine) blankets and rugs, sand paintings
Jewelry
Art of Ancient Rome and Byzantine Civilization
Become familiar artworks from Ancient Rome including;
Le Pont du Gard
